Melanie took me down to the Alaskan pipeline today, which is one of the points of interest here at Fairbanks. We drove past North Pole (This is a town close to Fairbanks, with a "real" Santa Claus and his reindeers. The idea was to boost tourism through kids who could meet Mr. Claus) to reach the look out point for the pipeline.
The pipeline runs all the way from Barrow to Val Deez through Fairbanks. At Val Deez, the crude oil is shipped to places on the West Coast for refinement. The refined oil is then imported back into Alaska for consumption. So with all this transportation, gas in Alaska is as costly as any other parts of the country.
